Why Visit Seattle, USA
Seattle sits at the intersection of the Pacific Northwest wilderness and one of America\'s most innovative urban cultures. The mountains are visible from the streets. The seafood arrives from the sound that borders the city. The coffee culture that now defines cafés globally originated here. For the 2026 World Cup, Lumen Field hosts matches in a city that genuinely loves football — the Sounders have some of the most passionate supporters in American soccer.
Best Time to Visit
World Cup 2026: June–July. Seattle in summer is outstanding — long days, temperatures of 22–26°C and very little rain. The city is at its best in July. Book early given World Cup demand. Best months overall: July–September — the Pacific Northwest summer is genuinely glorious. Avoid November–March if rain is a concern (the reputation is deserved).
Getting There and Around
Seattle\'s Link Light Rail connects the airport to Downtown and Capitol Hill efficiently. Lumen Field is a 10-minute walk from King Street Station. The streetcar and bus system cover most neighbourhoods. A hire car or ferry is useful for day trips to the Olympic Peninsula, Mount Rainier or the San Juan Islands. The city is hilly — some walking routes require effort.
Where to Stay
Capitol Hill is Seattle\'s most vibrant neighbourhood — excellent independent restaurants, coffee shops and hotels with genuine character. South Lake Union is modern and walkable. Belltown is convenient for Pike Place Market and Lumen Field. Queen Anne offers residential calm and views of the Space Needle. Avoid the cheapest hotels in the Pioneer Square area late at night.
Must-See Highlights
Pike Place Market — the oldest continuously operating farmers\' market in the US, with fishmongers, flower stalls and the original Starbucks (queue for the experience, not the coffee). The Seattle Art Museum — outstanding permanent collection including major Native American and Pacific Rim art. Chihuly Garden and Glass — Dale Chihuly\'s studio glass installation at the base of the Space Needle is genuinely extraordinary. The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) — Frank Gehry\'s metallic building contains excellent exhibitions on Jimi Hendrix, grunge music and science fiction. A Washington State Ferry crossing — take the ferry to Bainbridge Island for the views of the Olympic Mountains and city skyline; the 35-minute crossing is one of the finest urban journeys in America.
Food and Dining
Seattle\'s seafood is the reason to eat here. Taylor Shellfish Farms in Capitol Hill serves oysters from its own beds at market prices — outstanding. The Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard is the city\'s most celebrated oyster bar. For coffee, Victrola and Stumptown represent the serious end of the scene that Starbucks commodified. The Ballard neighbourhood has the city\'s best independent restaurant scene; Staple and Fancy consistently delivers.
Comfort and Accessibility
Seattle\'s hills are significant — the area around Pike Place Market involves substantial gradients. The waterfront and the flat areas around Lumen Field are accessible. The summer weather is ideal for walking. Pack a light waterproof even in July — showers can appear without warning. The evenings cool quickly; a layer is always useful.
Safety and Practical Tips
Seattle is a safe and pleasant city. The area around 3rd Avenue downtown has a visible drug and homelessness problem — not dangerous to pass through but worth awareness. The emergency number is 911. Travel insurance essential.
Insider Tips
Take the water taxi to West Seattle from the downtown waterfront and walk up to Alki Beach — the views back across Elliott Bay to the city skyline are the best in Seattle, and almost no tourists make the crossing. The Fremont neighbourhood is home to a 5-metre bronze troll under the Aurora Bridge, a Lenin statue and the best Sunday market in the city — an entirely different Seattle from the tourist infrastructure. Drive the Chuckanut Drive north of Seattle for the coastal road through old-growth forest with views across Puget Sound to the San Juan Islands.
