San Francisco is one of the most physically beautiful cities in the world — a fact that decades of tech industry coverage has obscured. The fog rolling through the Golden Gate, the Victorian painted ladies against the hills, the bay at every end of every cross street: this is a city of extraordinary visual drama compressed into 7 by 7 miles. For the 2026 World Cup, Levi\'s Stadium in nearby Santa Clara hosts matches; San Francisco itself rewards several days of exploration regardless.

World Cup 2026: June–July. San Francisco in summer is famously cool — Mark Twain allegedly called the coldest winter he ever spent a summer in San Francisco. Expect 15–18°C, morning fog and evenings that require a jacket even in July. Pack layers. Best months overall: September–November — the famous Indian summer brings the warmest, clearest days of the year. June and July are the foggiest months.

The BART rail system connects San Francisco to Santa Clara (for Levi\'s Stadium) in about 90 minutes, with a connection at Millbrae. Within the city, MUNI (streetcars and buses) and the iconic cable cars reach most attractions. The city is walkable in neighbourhoods but hilly — the hills are genuinely steep and require comfortable footwear. Taxis and rideshares are plentiful.

Union Square is central and convenient. Hayes Valley and the Mission District offer more neighbourhood character, excellent independent restaurants and better value. Nob Hill suits those who prefer traditional hotel grandeur — the Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins have extraordinary city views. Avoid accommodation around the Tenderloin district, which borders Union Square to the west.

The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park — outstanding American art collection with a tower offering panoramic city views. The Legion of Honor — European art in a Beaux-Arts building above the bay, with a Rodin collection and views of the Golden Gate. Alcatraz — book the audio tour well in advance; the island and the bay crossing are genuinely atmospheric. Golden Gate Park — larger than Central Park in New York, with the Botanical Garden, Conservatory of Flowers and the bison paddock. The Ferry Building Marketplace — the city\'s finest food market, best on Saturday mornings when the farmers\' market surrounds the building.

The Ferry Building has outstanding food vendors including Acme Bread, Cowgirl Creamery and Hog Island Oyster Company. The Mission District has the city\'s best taquerias — La Taqueria and El Farolito are the perennial favourites. For fine dining, San Francisco consistently ranks among the top food cities in the US; Zuni Café on Market Street has been a city institution for 40 years. Chinatown\'s dim sum restaurants on weekday mornings are genuinely excellent and inexpensive.

The hills are the main physical challenge — some streets exceed 25° gradient. Wear comfortable, supportive footwear. The cold and fog can surprise visitors expecting California warmth; always carry a layer. The cable cars require some standing and holding — not ideal for those with balance concerns, though the F-Market streetcar covers similar ground more accessibly.

San Francisco has a visible homelessness and drug problem in certain areas, particularly around the Tenderloin and parts of SoMa. Tourist areas are generally safe but exercise normal awareness. The emergency number is 911. Travel insurance essential given US healthcare costs.

Take the 38-Geary bus all the way from Downtown to Ocean Beach — it passes through the Richmond district\'s excellent Asian restaurants and depositing you at the Pacific, usually in fog, with almost no other tourists. The Wave Organ at the end of the yacht harbour jetty is a sound sculpture that uses wave action to produce unexpected music — completely unknown to most visitors. Bi-Rite Creamery in the Mission and Tartine Bakery nearby represent San Francisco\'s food culture at its most honest and excellent.
