Houston is the most ethnically diverse major city in the United States — a fact that manifests most powerfully in its extraordinary food scene. Over 145 languages are spoken here. The Museum District contains 19 museums within walking distance of each other, several world-class. NRG Stadium, with its retractable roof, hosts World Cup matches in climate-controlled comfort regardless of the July heat. Houston consistently surprises visitors who arrive with low expectations.

World Cup 2026: June–July. Houston in summer is extremely hot and humid — 34–38°C with high humidity. NRG Stadium\'s retractable roof means match-day comfort is guaranteed. Plan all outdoor activity for early morning or after dark. Best months overall: October–April — mild temperatures, low humidity and the city\'s full cultural programme. Spring wildflowers (March–April) are extraordinary in the surrounding Hill Country.

Houston is a car-dependent city with limited public transport. The METRORail has three lines covering the Museum District, Downtown and the Medical Center. NRG Stadium is served by the METRORail Red Line. A hire car is the most practical option for exploring the full city. Traffic on Houston\'s highways can be severe at peak hours — plan accordingly.

The Museum District and Midtown offer the best combination of cultural access and walkability. Montrose is the city\'s most characterful neighbourhood — independent restaurants, galleries and a genuinely vibrant street life. The Heights is a historic neighbourhood with Victorian homes and an excellent weekend market. Downtown is convenient for NRG Stadium via METRORail but quiet in the evenings.

The Museum of Fine Arts Houston — the largest art museum in the southern United States, with particular strength in Latin American and decorative arts. Free on Thursdays. The Menil Collection — one of the most important private art collections ever given to the public, housed in Renzo Piano\'s serene building in Montrose. The Rothko Chapel adjacent to it is a place of extraordinary contemplative power. Space Center Houston — NASA\'s visitor centre 45 minutes south of the city, with actual spacecraft and mission control facilities. The Houston Zoo in Hermann Park — consistently ranked among the finest in the US. Buffalo Bayou Park — 10 miles of green space through the centre of the city, with sculpture installations and excellent views of the Downtown skyline.

Houston\'s food scene reflects its diversity. Viet-Cajun crawfish at Crawfish and Noodles is the city\'s signature dish — an only-in-Houston fusion of Vietnamese and Louisiana Cajun cooking. Hugo\'s in Montrose is the finest Mexican restaurant in Texas. The Mahatma Gandhi District on Hillcroft has outstanding Indian food. Brennan\'s of Houston has been serving Creole cuisine since 1967 and remains essential. For barbecue, Truth BBQ is widely considered the city\'s finest.

The summer heat and humidity require significant planning. Never schedule outdoor activities between 11am and 4pm in July. All major attractions are heavily air-conditioned. Hire cars are air-conditioned. Drink water constantly. Sunscreen of SPF 50 minimum.

The Orange Show Monument in the East End is an outsider art environment built over 25 years by a postman who believed oranges were the perfect food — one of the most extraordinary things in America and almost entirely unknown outside Houston. The Breakfast Klub on Travis Street has been serving catfish and grits to queuing locals since 2001 — arrive before 9am to avoid the wait. Drive Navigation Boulevard through the East End on a Saturday evening when the taco trucks, quinceañera supply shops and norteño music create a neighbourhood entirely on its own cultural terms.
