Why Visit Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen is the most liveable city in Europe by almost any measure — clean, safe, extraordinarily well-designed, and with a food culture that genuinely transformed the world’s understanding of what Nordic ingredients could do. The concept of hygge (the pleasure of simple things done beautifully) is not a marketing invention but a genuine cultural value that permeates the city.

📅

Best Time to Visit

Best months: May–August. Copenhagen’s summers are magnificent — long days, outdoor dining and Tivoli Gardens in full swing. Christmastime (December) is another excellent period: Tivoli’s Christmas market and Danish winter cosiness make it one of Europe’s most atmospheric December destinations.

🚆

Getting There and Around

Copenhagen is extraordinarily bikeable — more bicycles than people and dedicated cycling infrastructure throughout. For non-cyclists, the Metro (M1/M2/M3/M4) is excellent. Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup): Metro to the city centre in 12 minutes — the most efficient airport connection in Scandinavia.

🏨

Where to Stay

The Indre By (inner city) is central and compact, walking distance from Tivoli and the National Museum. Frederiksberg (quieter, greener) is favoured by Copenhageners themselves. Nørrebro is the most multicultural and creative neighbourhood — independent restaurants and a genuine urban edge.

Must-See Highlights

Tivoli Gardens: Open since 1843 — not a fairground but one of the world’s great garden-entertainment complexes. Go on a weekday evening for the lights.
Nationalmuseet (National Museum): The Viking collection and prehistoric bog bodies are among Europe’s most remarkable museum experiences. Free.
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (45 minutes by train): one of the world’s great modern art museums, in a clifftop garden above the sound between Denmark and Sweden.
Nyhavn at noon: The coloured harbourfront at its most beautiful with outdoor tables.
Torvehallerne food market at Nørreport: Copenhagen’s outstanding covered food market.

🍽

Food and Dining

Copenhagen transformed global gastronomy — Noma’s alumni run half the interesting restaurants in the city. The smørrebrød (open sandwiches) at traditional lunch restaurants and the New Nordic restaurant scene offer extraordinary eating at every budget level. Prices are among the highest in Europe — budget accordingly.

Comfort and Accessibility

Copenhagen is one of the most accessible cities in Europe — flat, well-signed, excellent public transport, universally high standards throughout. The weather can be cool and windy even in summer; layers and a waterproof are essential.

🛡

Safety and Practical Tips

Copenhagen is one of the safest cities in the world for tourists. Christiania (the free commune) is safe to visit in daylight; normal awareness at night. Emergency: 112.

Insider Tips

Assistens Cemetery in Nørrebro: Where Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard are buried — also a neighbourhood park where Copenhageners bring picnics between the graves.
The Round Tower (Rundetårn): A 17th-century astronomical tower with a 360° view of Copenhagen’s spires. Ascent by spiral ramp, no stairs.
Bredgade street (Østerport area): Copenhagen’s most beautiful street and the location of the finest antique dealers and art galleries.
