Why Visit Cape Town, South Africa
Cape Town is one of the world’s most dramatically beautiful cities — Table Mountain presiding over a city of extraordinary cultural complexity, extraordinary wine and extraordinary seafood. It rewards engagement with its full context — the Winelands, the Cape Peninsula, Robben Island and the townships — not just the waterfront and the mountain.
Best Time to Visit
Best months: October–April (Southern Hemisphere summer). January and February are Cape Town’s finest months — clear skies, warm dry temperatures (26–30°C), beaches and Winelands at their best. December–January is peak season; book well ahead. May–August can be cold and rainy; the mountain is often cloud-covered.
Getting There and Around
A hire car is strongly recommended for the Cape Peninsula drive, the Winelands and the broader region. Within the city: MyCiti bus and Uber/Bolt are both reliable. Cape Town International Airport is 25 minutes from the city centre.
Where to Stay
The City Bowl (De Waterkant, Bo-Kaap, Gardens) is central and excellent. The V&A Waterfront area offers a safe, comfortable hotel district with immediate access to Table Mountain cable car departures. Camps Bay (Atlantic Seaboard) is the most glamorous beach suburb.
Must-See Highlights
Table Mountain Cable Car: Book online, go on a clear day (the website has a webcam), arrive for the first car (8am). The plateau walk is extraordinary. Allow 3 hours.
Cape Peninsula drive: Chapman’s Peak, Cape of Good Hope, Boulders Beach penguins — one of the world’s great scenic drives. Allow a full day.
Robben Island: Tours led by former political prisoners — deeply moving. Book ahead; weather cancellations occur.
Stellenbosch and Franschhoek Winelands: South Africa’s finest wine country. Franschhoek is the more beautiful and gastronomically superior town.
Bo-Kaap neighbourhood: Cape Town’s Malay Quarter — brightly painted houses and the best Cape Malay restaurant (Biesmiellah).
Food and Dining
Cape Town has one of the southern hemisphere’s finest restaurant scenes. Cape Malay food (bobotie, koeksisters, bredie) is extraordinary and unique. The Franschhoek food valley is consistently rated among the southern hemisphere’s finest dining destinations. Excellent fresh snoek, bream and kingklip throughout.
Comfort and Accessibility
Cape Town is a large, spread-out city that requires a car for comfortable exploration. The Atlantic Seaboard South Easter wind can be very strong in summer — carry a windbreaker. Most major hotels and restaurants meet high international comfort standards.
Safety and Practical Tips
Cape Town requires sensible urban awareness — tourist areas are safe, but the city has significant inequality and petty crime. Do not walk in unfamiliar areas after dark; use Uber or hotel-arranged transport at night. Leave valuables in the hotel safe. Emergency: 10111 (police) or 112.
